South Sentral Positronix

alternating.bit This is an outstanding album. I typically prefer an album to stay within one genre or theme but somehow this album manages to win me over, despite its diverse offerings. Perhaps it's Grainger's melancholic doom gloom touch that seals it all together but we've got some club beats, dub techno, dark industrial vibes, minimal house and ambient going on here. Choosing a favorite cut is impossible I recommend the entire work.

  • [Ashcan Edition #ACRM0002] "Laserwaves" Limited Recycled Art Assemblage & CD-R Set
Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

In the interest of reducing waste as much as possible, and given how much material is produced every year maintaining a back catalog as well as current releases in my studio, I became fascinated with using the things that usually end up thrown away to facilitate other new things instead. Recycled art has been around for a long time, but this would be something just a bit more than that - it would remain intrinsically connected to the musical process that generated these pieces of waste to begin with. I began with making unique limited editions of releases that had some cosmetic flaw about them - smudged ink on the disc face, a defect on a cassette's playback - and fashioning these castaway items into their own royal presentations. These were the first Ashcan Editions, and so I am now expanding and continuing this format by assembling pieces of frameable, hangable "low art" - conceptually and aesthetically existing somewhere between a framed photograph and something more original and substantial. Inspired by prior iterations of recycled art, junkyard art and Duchamp's infamous "readymades", they are projections of both artistic intent and utilitarian conservationism. These pieces are created using slabs of ultra-thick painter's matboard and assembling repetitive patterns out of offcuts from the glossy photographic prints I order en-masse for using as CD-R inserts. They resemble visual echoes of the original album cover, and each one made is completely unique to itself. They come signed and numbered, and are shipped in a protective plastic bag, ready to be framed, pinned to the wall or even just placed on a countertop or shelf somewhere as an aesthetic piece.

Featured here is a signed and numbered set of six pieces, bearing the title "LASERWAVES", using offcuts from the glossy photographic print cover inserts for South Sentral Positronix. They vary slightly in size, generally measuring about 5x7", and ship with a CD-R copy of the South Sentral Positronix album, as well as the digital download here at Bandcamp.

about

SSP is an album that came together subconsciously. That is to say, while learning new pieces of hardware and experimenting with these devices both inside and outside of the studio, I accumulated a large amount of informal material. Upon closer inspection, much of it seemed to have a mind of its own, and I realized there was an album just waiting to be christened from the bits and pieces strewn across my tapes and hard drives. A few tracks are (perhaps obviously) outtakes from Deep Earth sessions, while others are both fresh and faceless in the way that only techno can be. There are also fascinating short tracks, which felt like cartilage to me - SSP is not without a sense of humor. Altogether, the album is inspired by things like Ovuca's Onclements and AFX's Analogue Bubblebath 3. More original than a mixtape, not quite cohesive enough to be a conceptual work. A pleasant hodgepodge to stimulate the senses and perhaps offer a renewed look at just what the hell I'm doing with all these machines in this tiny room.

There is a limited edition CD-R version of SSP, available to the general public, while a much more limited cassette version exists and is already making its way to a few unsuspecting mailboxes...
