about

Originating as a commissioned work for a compilation, Arc Test was fundamentally an experimental session (similar to many others) wherein attempts were made to create entire tracks from the genesis of a single loop. In this case, a four bar loop from a Fela Kuti song was extracted, bounced to tape and subsequently fed to the CH composting machine. The results range from the subtly groovy Arc Test, which made the cut for the compilation in the end, to the more mutant ambient techno of Test Arc, to the absolute isolationist windswept landscapes of Es Tract.

Further evidence in support of the notion that Coppice Halifax works begin with an idea (which is the door) and are put into motion by my hands (which are the keys), conveying through the vessel of equipment powered by electric current (which is the voice) and translating this indescribable clustering of energy into describable sound and physically observable form (which becomes the body of work). In short, Coppice Halifax is not created, but channeled and transmuted. Not just anyone could slip into my studio and make these things, of course, but I prefer to view my output as somewhat inevitable, affected by nature, pushed forward and pulled backward by time. As Michaelangelo once said: “In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it.” Thus, my music already exists, albeit in some peripheral dimension or plane of existence, and I am merely opening the door to my possible past and present tense, and subsequently, my future.
