about

When the 10th anniversary of the original COASTAL REVERIES session approached, and the first public edition of the album was being updated with a current remastering job, I felt compelled to explore the source material a bit more intimately, as I have for several other remasters, in the interest of producing something new with/from the sonic compost. The result of that tangent is FAMILIAR SHORES, a double-album collecting two longform sessions of excavation that transfigure melodic and field recording content from COASTAL REVERIES over/under a warm sinewave bassline and a kick-drum heartbeat. The two pieces presented here could be considered a missing link between COASTAL REVERIES and things like VERDANT ACRE or OCEAN LION - they are subtropical, saltwater-splashed affairs that still feel terrestrial enough in their Earthy rhythms and chordal longing to indicate that they are not fully oceanic, but stranded on the beach, gazing out to an empty sea, perhaps even considering walking into the waves without a single glance back. FAMILIAR SHORES are aptly named, as they conjure up a sensation of having been here before, despite being altogether unmapped locations. Another romantic excursion up one of the many coastlines of the Halifaxian continent, marked in the travelogue, as the sun sets slowly on another long droned Summer, our footprints almost surely erased as the tide rolls back in.
