about

Upon revisiting my Womb Oscillations box set (released under my birthname the year my daughter was born) for the fifth anniversary reissue, my curiosity in returning to the audio from a production standpoint couldn't be resisted. The original release consisted of both unprocessed and processed recordings of my daughter's prenatal heartbeat via home and hospital ultrasounds, as well as manipulated room recordings of hospital visits throughout her gestation.

My current interests in taking old recordings and composting them into new things worked well in this approach, and after some basic prep work rendering aspects of the original audio into a serviceable set of rhythmic events, I completed the entire album in a single session that lasted late into the early morning as the sun rose over the valley. Only the original audio was utilized here to create an album that is equal parts hospital machinery, minimal techno and, perhaps most importantly, a heartbeat. The name Growth Markers was chosen as a way to convey the rhythm's sense of being on a grid, a measurement system, and to relate the growth of my daughter (who is now five years old) through a system of marked changes across time.

Initially, I intended for Growth Markers to be issued as a bonus sixth disc in the Womb Oscillations reissue box, but after some consideration I decided it was better to leave the original set on its own as a document, and issue this album concurrently but separately. Here, it exists in both universes - as a Halifaxian techno album, topically, and on a deeper level, a sentimental bridge to something much more personal.
