Following the field-recording triptych Porch Hash Logbook, an exercise in acoustic minimalism and wordless diaries, I pursued a tangent of exploring the possible applications of these field recordings within the framework of dub music. Forming an ouroboros of sorts, these tracks transfigure the sound of THC-doused outdoors into smoky and syrupy deep techno.
The recordings were routed through various channels of my R-EW Audioholistics modular system, as well as the vocoder within the Arturia Microfreak and reverberation units such as the Alesis Quadraverb, the Pioneer SR-202W and the Lexicon Alex. Over and under these processing scenarios, I played a Korg ES-1 sampler, which handled basic drumkit and bassline duties, and the final summed mix was sent into a DAW with numerous automation and modulation envelopes, rhythmic gates and slicers and additional FX. Finally, live takes were recorded wherein I'd nudge and pull on the gates and tempo grid, setting into motion many interesting mutations of the source material.
Sonically, these pieces are influenced by early Vladislav Delay, many records in the Chain Reaction catalog, many of Rod Modell's records for Soma, Intrusion, wzrdryAV and JS Zeiter. They are deep and dubbed out compost, with sounds that will likely appeal to fans of Leaf Cloak, Pharmlands/Static Pharming and Verdant Acre.
These sessions were immediately followed by a subsequent session of more minimalistic reductions, which are being released separately with the appended label "Porch Compost" - to be issued on May 7.
