about

Almost exactly one year prior (to the day), REFLECTOR was given a 10th anniversary remaster and reissue, augmented by four new pieces - designated as RELICT - that transfigured the original source material in new ways, a full decade after the initial sessions. As many things in my creative landscape are, REFLECTOR was itself a branching work from an album called RADIANS, which was recorded prior to REFLECTOR but issued a year after it at Recycled Plastics - owing to a delay in record label schedules (isn't there always?) - and so in some strange sense, we're able to celebrate these albums being reinstated in an order reversed from their point of origin, and I've just got to laugh, because it has always felt more obvious that REFLECTOR became the "canonical" version of these compositions, rather than RADIANS, and even ten years later, I cannot divorce the material from that interpretation.

Sonically, RADIANS was one of the post-ANALOG BOTANY/PAWLEYS ISLAND albums that further explored the format of dub techno and psychedelic ambience, "drone techno" as a few people liked to refer to it at that moment in time, and looking back, I've never been 100% happy with the original mastering on the album. RADIANS was an exciting record to make, playful and filled with all manner of bubbling vocoder chords, spasms of noise and textural grit, incessant and almost motorik rhythmic forms, and to my ears now feels much more like a transitional work than a cogent through-line of any sort. I am more than pleased that I have finally managed a mastering pass on the material that feels more substantial and comfortable than it has prior to this.

Following in the same template laid out by the REFLECTOR reissue, I've once again revisited the RADIANS source material in the form of four new RELICT sessions, although a number of notable differences followed in the resultant recordings. The most obvious change is the higher tempos present in these new tracks, along with a generally more dialed-back level of reverberation, instead favoring spatial effects like chorus, delays of various disciplines and even some granular processing, which hopefully opened up the stereo field enough to allow these nascent waters to draw new river lines across the Halifaxian map. RADIANS itself was notable at the time for containing some faster than usual tempos within the CH catalog, and so it is my desire to reflect this thinking in my re-visitation of the material.

Longtime listeners will note the absence of three remixes drafted for RADIANS, by Ohrwert, Contemporary Vision and Emi Ono, and these mixes have been omitted from the reissue edition in order to maintain a more cohesive feel in the runtime between the original album and the new RELICT recordings. Those interested in obtaining these three mixes can still listen to/purchase them at Recycled Plastics.

As before, the expanded edition of RADIANS has been given a new physical reissue, with a holographic 3x3" cover sticker to match the REFLECTOR reissue, making the two double-albums a complete mirror image of one another. Both photographs used for the REFLECTOR and RADIANS reissue editions were taken beside the outside wall of the White Pillar studio door, echoing the original design of spattered paint and textured stone given to both editions of REFLECTOR at Entropy Records in France. For the occasion, the REFLECTOR 2xCD-R has been reinstated with an additional 10 copies, so that newcomers can pick up both albums at once if they so desire: coppicehalifax.bandcamp.com/album/reflector-10th-anniversary-expanded-remaster
