about

In celebration of the reissue of 2008's long out of print drone-triptych POROUS VARIATIONS, I've revisited the session tapes and used some modern-age Halifaxian alchemy to render the woodsy resonations and monolithic bass down into so many grains of glittering sand that wash up on a familiar shore. Primarily sampling the POROUS VARIATIONS cut 'Sequoian', I felt compelled to process these old growths into sturdy stained boards, reassembled into a vessel that sets out to sea after the advancing ocean tide begins to subtract a little too much from the landscape. If none of this makes any sense, I can only apologize, because it all feels perfectly aligned in my mind's eye. Coppice Halifax as a project, even as a name, has always been meant to invoke the most vivid elements from oceanic and forestial locations, and something about working with POROUS VARIATIONS again felt very connected to that initial ethos. As you listen to this huge session, it should slowly become apparent that the towering trees and green canopies eventually and inevitably give way to rising sea levels, humidities, salty sunbeams rippling across bow and broken wave. It begins in the deep woods and ends adrift somewhere in the Atlantic. A truly liminal piece of work that could only ever exist between the two very different worlds of my work as Coppice Halifax, and my work under my birthname.

**NOTE: For listeners unfamiliar with the massive POROUS VARIATIONS album who wish to take the full trip, a special ltd. edition 4xCD-R box set, which includes this deep mix, awaits you here: briangrainger.bandcamp.com/album/porous-variations-expanded-remastered
