about

'Sinking Magenta' is an EP collecting three different shades of Halifaxian acreage, each from a different session, and designed with a different purpose in mind.

The title track was recorded in August of 2021 for inclusion on a compilation at Adventurous Music, and I've wanted to make a single or EP for it since then. The second track is an alternative mix of 'Varia' from the Porch Hash Variations sessions in April of 2021, and was given a subsequent release at Cold Fiction as part of their annual Futur[e]cho compilation later that year. The closing track - 'Mansfield Flares' - is a previously unreleased session that tangentially grew out of Milieu's Passage Five album in Autumn 2019, initially recorded as a smeared and impressionistic Ocean Lion-adjacent dub and shelved away for later reference, and then more rigorously filled out in sporadic updates since then, with this final mix illustrating a lot of polymetric composition and even some wild drum programming that you can tell was done during the sessions for The Flower to Disappear.

All three of these recordings link together through their shared nature with Milieu recordings, either in provenance or in process, and like other releases that follow this path (see: River Mural) I relish the chance to blur the lines between my projects where and when I can, because it feels as if these compositions are always moving in two different directions at once. The EP is also texturally fitting for the anticipation and colorful excitement I feel as Spring slowly emerges from the thrall of a bitter Winter, and it is always my sincere hope that my music provides an apt elemental counterpart to your experiences with the natural world.
