My wife loves this track, calling it soothing and relaxing. She especially likes the sounds of nature that the field recording aspect brought to the music.
Favorite track: Retreat [Coppice Halifax Excavation].

After the recent issuance of an extended ambient Milieu recording, The Synthesist's Alphorn Retreat, fellow sound designer and friend Rimas Campe (Downscope, Treadset, Dreams Without End) decided to surprise me by crafting a remix of the piece. I was impressed with his reinterpretation of the music, and after thinking for a little while about how best to present it, I opted to follow suit with a Coppice Halifax iteration, and release both mixes together as a split-remix album.
Both of our remixes were done in a similar production approach, which entails using the original recording as 90% of the source material, and introducing only a single origin of rhythmic matter into the DNA of Alphorn Retreat. For my take, it was the use of a vintage Yamaha RX11 digital drum machine, which I have used in a similar fashion before on Ferrolog and sessions for Static Pharming and Green Shape. I also set the entire passage against a field recording backdrop of my neighborhood at 3 AM during a Summer night, and the rhythm of the RX11 actually seems to play with the outdoor sounds in magical ways. For Downscope's remix, his rhythmic input (as I understand it) consisted of a more traditional drum loop sample that was processed/reprocessed and mutated into the subtle pulse you hear anchoring his extended rework.
Together, these two mixes accumulate into something a bit more than simply remixes - they become a night (in)version of a sunny mountainside, trading in the orange hues of warm Summer light for the cool blue of a snowy valley quietly sleeping through the Winter. The photograph used for the cover was taken from my bedroom window, coincidentally the same bedroom window that graces the Ferrolog cover, and it felt appropriate for the transfiguration of Alphorn - a sustained fantasy of musical escapism, now brought back home again, to my bedside looking down on the trees in the valley.
