  • [Ashcan Edition #ACRM0004] "Pillars I-III" Limited Recycled Art Triptych & CD-R Set
Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

In the interest of reducing waste as much as possible, and given how much material is produced every year maintaining a back catalog as well as current releases in my studio, I became fascinated with using the things that usually end up thrown away to facilitate other new things instead. Recycled art has been around for a long time, but this would be something just a bit more than that - it would remain intrinsically connected to the musical process that generated these pieces of waste to begin with. I began with making unique limited editions of releases that had some cosmetic flaw about them - smudged ink on the disc face, a defect on a cassette's playback - and fashioning these castaway items into their own royal presentations. These were the first Ashcan Editions, and so I am now expanding and continuing this format by assembling pieces of frameable, hangable "low art" - conceptually and aesthetically existing somewhere between a framed photograph and something more original and substantial. Inspired by prior iterations of recycled art, junkyard art and Duchamp's infamous "readymades", they are projections of both artistic intent and utilitarian conservationism. These pieces are created using slabs of ultra-thick painter's matboard and assembling repetitive patterns out of offcuts from the glossy photographic prints I order en-masse for using as CD-R inserts. They resemble visual echoes of the original album cover, and each one made is completely unique to itself. They come signed and numbered, and are shipped in a protective plastic bag, ready to be framed, pinned to the wall or even just placed on a countertop or shelf somewhere as an aesthetic piece.

Featured here is a signed and numbered set of three pieces, bearing the titles "PILLARS I / PILLARS II / PILLARS III", using offcuts from the glossy photographic print cover inserts for various volumes of the White Pillar series. They vary slightly in size, generally measuring about 5x7", and ship with a CD-R copy of the White Pillar album, as well as the digital download for White Pillar here at Bandcamp. "PILLARS I-III" is the first triptych set of recycled art assemblages being sold all together, instead of separately. As such, this set has been given a special discounted price. Note: Although the numbering on each piece suggests an order, the hand numbering indicates only the order in which these pieces were produced. The intended placement of the triptych is #2/1/3.

about

White Pillar is the first of a multi-part series, intended to both document and transfigure the sonic ephemera from the White Pillar Workshop's surrounding area - a valley in southern Ohio, near such things as a USAF base, NASA and the Serpent Mound, the largest serpent effigy in the world, which dates back to 300 BCE. These locations and several others factor heavily into what populates the airwaves and frequency bands of many types, and the White Pillar series exists to isolate such bands and transmute them into something musically affecting. As such, it is fitting that this recording and those that follow it bear the namesake of the new studio, christening it publicly and properly, and looking ever forward to the future.
