These six recordings are extended beatless studies of the isolated synthesizers and field recordings utilized during the WINTERHEARTH MONOLITH sessions. The designation "Residual Mixes" applies for a number of reasons, mainly owing to their continued tangential exploration of the analog and digital synthesis at play on the multiple machine voices used (Korg MS-20 / Minilogue, Roland SH-32, Arturia Microbrute), as they are left to wander in the FX-soaked environment surrounding them.
Recorded at different intervals during a full-day's session, they are adjusted, subtly modified and refined across several hours to suit my listening purposes as I worked on cartography. Across this span of time, the focus became more centered around the field recordings and textures (piezoelectric microphones on glass windows, during Winter rainfall) becoming more and more detailed and prominent, while the synthesizers became more eroded and distant, eventually trailing off beneath the elemental downpour to rest at a faintly audible volume.
I considered not releasing these variations publicly at all, and instead only publishing the namesake original mix, but with the exhaustion that a new year brings with it, I felt they would be appreciated during the colder and more naked months of 2020, a balm and a blanket for those that need such a thing, as I often do when the weather is inhospitable.

This is one of my favorite long-form Milieu recordings. Gently sustained with soft but satisfying swells. It makes me feel like it's the end of a perfect day. Rik Johnson
