about

For several years I recorded about a dozen different sessions with intent to create an album called Whitehope, a pastoral ambient fantasy with varied degrees of dub and techno. I always got close, but not until late 2014 did I finally record the definitive version. Fast-forward to Autumn 2016 - I've just moved 559 miles from the subtropics to the brisk Far Hills of Ohio, and in unpacking I've unearthed a number of lost or outright forgotten recordings. One such find was a 120m cassette, ornately decorated with purple ink stamps of the CH "sun" logo, zero text. Upon playing the tape back, the sound of an almost-there Whitehope crept out of the speakers. This tape contained two extended hour-long sides, beatless and foggy with analog chords, modulating through what sounds like phasers, flange, hissy delays and low pass filtering. Side one seemed to be a bit more melodic than side two, but both have a charm that I cannot deny or even fully identify. It is entirely possible that one of these tape sides was Whitehope for some amount of time, until I had second thoughts, or what I felt were better ideas. That I even found the cassette feels like a stroke of luck.

In any case, here are two windswept towers of sound, looming in their majesty and gentle in their comfortable stillness. A soft, predictable and warming balm of Halifaxian ambient music, hopefully providing some relief from this chaotic and dark year.
