A lengthy, convoluted process that began with a truncated set of thirty-three one-bar loops taken from recently unearthed four-track master tapes for 2009 drone album. These thirty-three bars were then looped and mutated via all manner of analog and digital FX, including (but not limited to) FFT, low-pass filtering, pitch shifting and noise gating. A single drum machine - a ring modulated Boss DR-550 - was introduced into the mix to provide both contrast and counterpoint. Three more very different alternative mixes were produced, each going a little bit further down a tangential path than the others. In the end, Cubic Surf somewhat resembles the dance-oriented processing on Photovoltaic Fragments, and this album could be considered a companion piece to that. Another deeply alien experience for headphone and hi-fi listening.
