The sonic equivalent of degradation via multi-generational xerox copying, embracing detritus, artifacts and increasingly mutant contrasts between light and dark. Grey Shape is a set of pieces that unexpectedly arrived from experimenting with taking the master tapes of Imperial Grey (themselves pieces created in part by transfiguring tapes from the Whitehope live rehearsals) and funneling the sound through different hardware setups. Elaborate comb filtering, sculpting with graphic and shelving equalizers and good old fashioned misuse of compression played major parts in this aural gardening session. The results are thick with compost, with sections that are recognizably from previous sources whirling together in the mix with altogether new sounds. These pieces are also distinctly more oriented to hip-hop tempos, rather than the usual technoid proclivities CH tends to exhibit, although there are aspects of Grey Shape that are absolutely techno, somewhere underneath all the monochromatic fog and polyrhythms. A lurching, looming off-blackness for your stereo to ooze out slowly...
