Raft is one of the rare beatless Coppice Halifax tracks, brought into existence by the request of the Cold Fiction label, for inclusion on their Light Clouds compilation of ambient music. When I completed the session, I knew I wanted to go back to the tapes later with a full techno treatment in mind, and this album collects all four of my additional revisions. Raft itself is something that might fit into Inland By Night - melodic pads with subtle stabs that are obviously inspired by dub music, and a lot of texture and grit filling out the night-time pastoral backdrop. The following four versions are hypnotic swirls of Impressionist techno, similar to the material on Static Physics and Static Pharming. Longform, deep, droning at times, melodic at others. The twenty minute closing version would probably have counted as an installment of the Static Pharming series, were this release not already in mind during the making of the recordings. An hour of organic ambient techno that works just as well for a nightcap as it does on a heavy duty bass system.
