SOFTWATER PINWHEEL is a four-track extended play, plucked from the archives and mastered for a proper release. Four versions of the same piece, initially created using a Yamaha QY-70 in tandem with several other key pieces of hardware, including Korg ER-1 and Boss DR-550/660 drum machines, the Korg ES-1 sampler and a small array of Volca synthesizers, such as the Keys analog polysynth (which I no longer possess) and the Bass analog mono. Altogether, SOFTWATER recalls extended singles such as MARAIS, JEL GUN and aspects of the ANALOG BOTANY series. It conveys a subdued atmosphere of dub chords and spaced-out synth accompaniment over heavy subharmonic bass and rhythms that alternate between a Voigt-esque schaffel and a more precise minimal techno attitude. The first two tracks were recorded in January 2016, in the Botany Bay studio, while the third and fourth tracks were alternate approaches to the same pieces, laid to tape in 2017 after relocating to the White Pillar Workshop in Ohio. Special thanks is owed to Atoll Intercom Systems, who not only designed the beautiful and evocative cover image used here, but also assisted in the arrangement and final sequencing of this release.
